Oh Happy Squid Day!
Japanese researchers managed to take pictures of the first living giant squid last year off the Ogasawara Islands. The pictures, which were announced publicly this week, are now available on National Geographic online. Using a camera-rigged fishing line the researchers lured the creature out of the dark at 2,950 feet beneath the sea. The squid lost a tentacle in the struggle, but managed to escape back to the depths.
I’ve been waiting for this one for a while, and it’s great to see the day has finally come. It’s a shame though that the squid had to loose an arm in the process -- the accident will probably weigh heavily on future negotiations. (article) (more squid bits)
